Hal often laughs and says, "Photography found me, I did not find photography!". Having been trained for infantry in 1969, he assumed Vietnam would be his assignment. Although due to an error he found himself in Washington, D.C., in a Signal Support Photo Lab servicing all of our nations capital including The White House. He fell in love with the opportunity to learn photography with the best equipment available, and within one year became supervisor of the U.S. Army Color Photographic Lab in Fort Myer, VA. He received the Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding service, and stayed on for 9 months as a civilian while they found a replacement.

heavensgateIn 1972 he returned home to Tulsa, Oklahoma to become manager of Oklahoma's oldest and largest commercial studio. Under his direction, advertisements were produced for major corporations including Pepsi Cola, Holiday Inn, and Fram Filters.

Hal's photography has been exhibited in numerous museums, including the Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art in Tulsa, OK, the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum in Oklahoma City, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene, OR, and the Roanoke Fine Arts Center in Roanoke, Virginia.


Magazines having published his art include Kodak's "Photo Decor", "The Virginian", "Prerogative", "Virginia Wildlife", and "Darkroom Magazine".nixon

His works are in private collections throughout the United States, including the author David Baldacci, Kerr McGee Corporation in Dallas, the May Companies in Denver, Alcoa Aluminum in Pittsburgh, ARCO Chemical in Fort Worth, and the permanent collection at the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum in Oklahoma City.

Congress formed the National Park Service, because of artist's paintings of the West. In 1991 to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the NPS, twelve artist were selected to interpret Cape Lookout, NC, our nation's newest part acquisition. Hal was honored to be the only artist selected from the photographic arts.

In 1993 Hal was recognized by the First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, as one of our nations outstanding artists.

In 2008 Hal was nominated for the Governor's Awards for the Arts. These awards presented by the Governor of Virginia are for individuals, organizations, or businesses that have made a significant contribution to the arts in the Commonwealth. These awards have been presented in 1979, 1985, 2000, and 2008.
